4 Must Have Features In Your Color Correction Software

Posted on: 27 March 2020

Color correcting video can be a difficult task to take on, especially if you do not have the right tools for the job. That's why you'll want to have the following features in the color correction software that you use to make this important part of the post-production process go smoothly.

Real Time Effects

Real time effects are used when color correction needs to be done across an entire shot, not just on a single frame. It's important to have real time effects that you can preview easily. If you need to stop for a significant amount of time to render your footage just to preview it, you're wasting time that you could be using to color correct. Real time effects are practically a necessity if you want to get work done during color correction.

Mask Tracking

It is rare that you'll apply a color correction to an entire shot. There are likely things within the shot that you want to isolate across the entire frame. For example, color correcting a subject in the foreground in one manner, while having the background color corrected in a different manner. The key to doing this is to create masks around objects that will be automatically tracked across the frame as the object moves. Your color correction software should be advanced enough to create and track these masks so that you don't need to rotoscope the object frame by frame.

Easy Look Transfers

If you are color correcting a narrative video, you likely have a lot of shots that are very similar to each other. Once you set that base look, you'll want to be able to very easily transfer it to the next shot with the press of a button. There is no need to recreate the look from scratch or go through a complicated process to transfer it to the next shot.

LUT Support

Professional footage is going to be shot with a flat color profile, which doesn't look that great when viewing it as raw footage. Thankfully, LUTs help fix that. They are a set of basic color corrections that allow the footage to look more true to life without having to do much work. It can even be used as a base to start your color correction. Being able to support LUTs is crucial, because new cameras are always coming out that have their own LUTs that go with the footage that was shot on the camera.
